A project to establish, fund and operate a wastewater treatment plant in New Cairo by public-private partnership (PPP) won the Water Deal of the Year 2009 award, in the Global Water Intelligence Conference, held recently in Paris. The conference is a major global event held annually to discuss developments in the water and investment sectors. The financial bids and the signing of the contracts of the New Cairo WWTP (with a capacity of 250,000 m3/d), took only 18 months to complete, which is a record time for such PPP project. In addition, the necessary funds were raised in 6 months by major Egyptian banks, in the midst of the world financial crisis. All these factors considered, the awarding institution found it easy to declare the Egyptian New Cairo WWTP winner, beating 3 other projects from Jordan, China and USA.
