Ghali: MoF Seeks to Ease Public Burdens

News Date: 7/11/2010 12:00 AM  Ghali: MoF Seeks to Ease Public Burdens
The Ministry of Finance's policy aims at easing the burdens of the public and fully protecting their rights through the issuance of laws in cooperation with the People's Assembly and Al-Shura Council, said Dr. Youssef Boutros Ghali the Minister of Finance. The said laws have had a positive impact in terms of reducing customs so as to keep commodity prices viable, reducing taxes, supporting social benefits and raising pensions (up to 300% in some cases, under the new Pension and Social Insurance Law).

Other laws issued for the benefit of the public include Law No. 73 which criminalizes the failure to present customers with bills. The law protects customers' rights to be refunded or have defective goods replaced, and ensures proper tax accounting for the bill issuer, the minister indicated.

The hot Tax Authority (TA) line, dedicated to inquiries concerning Law No. 73, has received many inquiries and complaints, which are being immediately examined and responded to in order to protect consumers' rights, Dr. Ghali added.

A proper bill or receipt that can be legally reckoned with should identify the business or the profession/professional in question, the commercial register and tax file number, in print rather than a hand-written form, the Minister noted.
