Egypt’s Minister of Finance, Ahmed Kouchouk, affirmed that Egypt looks forward to developing a shared vision to lead economic transformation toward fairer, more inclusive, and sustainable development, through an enhanced role for UNCTAD in addressing development challenges in developing countries and finding innovative financing solutions. He emphasized that UNCTAD serves as a strong voice for the Global South and a key supporter of integrating developing nations into the global economy.
Speaking at a roundtable on “Finance and Debt” during the UNCTAD Conference in Geneva, Kouchouk stated that Egypt is keen to advance reforms to the global financial architecture and transform debt into opportunities for investment and development, in order to alleviate burdens on developing economies. He stressed the need to establish new mechanisms for sustainable debt management in low- and middle-income countries.
The Minister added that geopolitical tensions, climate change, food security challenges, and the digital divide are exerting significant pressure on developing economies. He underscored the importance of mobilizing private sector investment to bridge development gaps and strengthening the role of African nations in global trade, development, and the world economy in a fair and balanced manner.
Kouchouk pointed out that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) represents a strategic opportunity to boost intra-African trade and expand access to international markets. He concluded by reaffirming Egypt’s commitment to the spirit of multilateralism, the United Nations Charter, and collective dialogue as essential tools for addressing today’s global challenges
