News Date: 7/11/2010 12:00 AM  L.E. 20m Medical Equipment Exempted From Sales Tax
Within the framework of the Ministry of Finance's policy to improve health services provided to the public, Dr. Youssef Boutros Ghali the Minister of Finance decided that medical equipment and medicines (priced at more than L.E. 20 million) imported for use in the hospitals of Ministry Of Health and Population's (MOHP) will be exempt from the Sales Tax (more than L.E. 1.74 million for these items).

The Ministry is doing its best to ease the burdens of the citizens in line with the state policy to provide the highest levels of health service for low-income brackets, Dr. Ghali added.

The medical equipment will be used in provincial hospitals, including Assiut University's South Egypt Cancer Institute (SECI), Ain Shams University's Pediatrics Hospital, American Project HOPE (Health Opportunities for People Everywhere), Cairo University's National Cancer Institute (NCI), Mansoura University's Urology and Nephrology Center (UNC), and Ain Shams University' Cardiac Surgery Academy (CSA). The exempted equipment includes CT scans, prefabricated operation rooms, as well as drugs used in treating some serious diseases, the minister indicated.

This exemption is also meant to save time, as the funds would have been first deposited with the public treasury, and then transferred to the Ministry of Health And Population in order to purchase new equipment or state-funded medical treatment programs or in building new hospitals, Dr. Ghali added.
