People's Assembly approves the increase in the wages of state employees by 15% and 10% for pensions, Dr. Ghali: The government has succeeded in narrowing the wage gap between senior and junior staff
-
The People’s Assembly has approved the draft law on a special raise to government employees by 15% of the salary without ceiling. The law also allows a 10% pension raise while raising the ceiling on pension to LE 70 from LE 60 as of July 2007.
Minister of Finance Dr. Youssef Boutros Ghali has announced that the government has responded favorably to a 15% raise in government salaries; a decision that will cost the treasury an additional billion pounds.
According to Ghali, the government will have therefore increased salaries by 72% of the amounts promised in the President’s electoral campaign in which salaries are projected to increase by 100% in the next five years. Ghali noted that the government has succeeded over the last three years in reducing the gap between salary gaps six times among the tiers of employees in small brackets as opposed to those in a leading departmental government positions.
