Head of the customs authority has announced that a huge project to develop the Alexandria port is underway to be inaugurated by President Mubarak heralding the launch of the largest and most important harbor in the Middle East that operates electronically. Mr. Galal Abul Fetouh who heads the customs authority, added that the upgrading of the giant port reflects the calculated coordination between the port and customs authorities to reduce the time required for the release of goods arriving or departing via the port.  The idea is to handle the goods electronically to minimize human error. Abul Fetouh noted that the most important results of the development will lead to minimal time required for the release of goods from the Alexandria port to two hours maximum as opposed to three days in the earlier stages. The port is said to lead to streamline the release of 60%  of the volume of foreign trade from and to Egypt via the port. (source: Al-Ahrar)
