Minister of Finance Dr. Youssef Boutros Ghali is to issue directives for the formation of appeal committees that undertakes the dissolution of tax disputes among taxpayers instead of a court ruling. Advisor to the Minister, Ashraf el Araby said that the Ministry has received the nominations for committee members from the tax authority, the industrial federation and commercial chambers. Training courses are already being given over the application of the new income tax law at the end of which an exam will be set to deliver committees with a ministerial approval. The total number of committees may be reduced to 50 as opposed to 258 in the previous law. Efforts are underway to streamline procedures in settlements of internal disputes via computers. On his part, head of the Egyptian tax authority Mahmoud Mohamed Aly has announced that the authority is currently closing disputes before reaching the appeal committees while strict instructions have been given to all tax districts to close taxpayers’ files and negotiate peaceful settlements, or to reconcile among the parties. Tax district heads have also been told to take their time in settling disputes. (source: Al-Gomhuriya)
