Dr. Ghali: The pound rate cannot be changed to keep the Exports increase and the competitive edge
-
Minister of Finance Dr. Youssef Boutros Ghali said that the banking system does not authorize the government to control the exchange rate but that such a responsibility lies in the hands of the Central Bank. Ghali explained that the pound rate cannot be changed to allow consumers to buy products at cheaper prices as that will negatively impact the competitive edge of Egyptian exports and reduce work opportunities. Ghali said that 32 ministers of finance from the Middle East, North Africa and the G-8 met during the Sharm el Sheikh forum to discuss reforms. Ghali explained that one issue did not lie in savings but in the exploitation of returns which have been estimated by the IMF at 240 billion dollars. Dr. Ghali said part of the returns will be used to increase purchases, a move which will have a positive impact on developed nations, another portion of returns on savings will be directed to investments in developing nations while a third portion will be directed to investment funds to create stability.( Source: Al-akhbar)
