Egypt to Chair UN Committee on International Tax Cooperation

Rami Youssef, Assistant Minister of Finance for Tax Policy, traveled this morning to New York to chair the meetings of the International Governmental Committee responsible for drafting the United Nations Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation, a move that underscores Egypt’s growing role as a key contributor to the formulation of international financial policies.

Mr. Youssef was elected Chair of this high-level committee, which enjoys broad international representation, reflecting strong global confidence in Egypt’s financial expertise and its capacity to lead complex international tax discussions.

Since the launch of its work, the committee has made tangible progress toward achieving international consensus between major economic powers and emerging and developing economies. Notable convergence has begun to emerge on several complex issues, most prominently the allocation of taxing rights, with efforts focused on establishing a fair mechanism for taxing profits arising from cross-border transactions.

The committee is also addressing key matters related to multinational corporations, including ensuring that taxes are collected in the jurisdictions where real economic activity and value creation occur. In addition, its work aims to strengthen sovereign resources by enabling developing countries to maximize tax revenues in support of the Sustainable Development Goals.
