Tax disputes which have been peacefully reconciled in the wake of the implementation of the new tax law have soared to 16.5 thousand cases out of a total of 26,000; an outstanding achievement that represents 61% of the total number of cases still open. In cases where disputes are in amounts in excess of 10,000 pounds,  6,000 requests for reconciliation have been submitted of which 1.8 thousand have already been closed.  Tax Authority chief Mahmoud Mohamed Aly said that requests are picking up and the authority has received directives from the Minister of Finance to proceed with closing open disputes and to show goodwill towards taxpayers in efforts to streamline tax collection. Mr. Aly explained that tax amounts that have been found to be in excess of due amounts will be duly returned by post.  Tens of checks have already been posted to taxpayers.  (Source: Al-Ahram)
