Radwan allocates the sum to State Budget Account in the Central Bank Azhar Legal Counsellor: Grand Imam waives his rights to all financial benefits and salary and devotes all his time, free of charge, to Islamic Call Egyptian Finance Minister Dr. Samir Radwan received a letter from the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Mosque, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayyeb, pledging support of Al-Azhar and its clerics and scholars to the Egyptian economy in the current difficult times. The Grand Imam also declared he was reimbursing all sums of money he had received as salary since he was appointed to this high-ranking post in March 2010. On behalf of the Grand Imam, Al-Azhar Legal Counsellor, Sayyed Sultan, handed in a check of LE 37,647 which is the sum of Dr Al-Tayyeb’s salary in the last twelve months. An official source of the Ministry of Finance said the Grand Imam wanted the sum to be reimbursed to the State General Exchequer. The Minister of Finance decided to have the sum deposited in the account of the State General Budget in the Central Bank. The Grand Imam has not received any allowances or other benefits for supervising the different activities and committees as a part of his job since his appointment. His only remuneration from Al-Azhar throughout this period was the salary he reimbursed, according to the Azhar Legal Counsellor. The Grand Imam has also asked the Minister of Finance to remove his name from the Azhar payroll as he will continue to serve the Mosque and the Islamic Call for no pay. Moreover, the Grand Imam refused to get any payment for discharging his duties in supervising and attending committees of the Islamic Research Academy, the Supreme Azhar Council, Azhar University examination duties and televised religious lectures. The Azhar consultants in all the legal, educational and financial fields in addition to areas of dialogue among religions and the Islamic call have not obtained any remuneration from Al-Azhar since they were appointed as advisors to the Grand Imam. They are all university professors who volunteer to serve the country for no charge. (Source: Ministry of Finance)
