The diversification and improvement of economic activity, together with strengthened partnership with the business community, helped Egypt offset the decline in revenues from the Suez Canal and the energy sector.
Preliminary indicators show that budget sector debt declined from 89.4% of GDP in June 2024 to 85.6% in June 2025.
“We are working on an integrated and ambitious strategy to improve all budget sector debt indicators,” Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk stated. He explained that the external debt of the budget sector decreased by USD 4 billion over the past two years, meaning that Egypt repaid more than it borrowed.
Kouchouk also highlighted that the average maturity of domestic debt was extended from 1.2 years in June 2024 to 1.6 years by the end of the last fiscal year.
