Egypt’s Minister of Finance, Ahmed Kouchouk, affirmed that Egypt looks forward to a stronger role for multilateral development banks and international financial institutions in reducing financing costs for both member states and the private sector. He emphasized the importance of broadly activating innovative and concessional financing instruments to ensure sustainable funding for development efforts in developing and African countries.
Speaking on the second day of the UNCTAD Conference in Geneva, Kouchouk stated that blended finance plays a significant and catalytic role in advancing development through mechanisms that are more adaptive and responsive to emerging economies. He underscored the need to strengthen multilateral development partnerships as a means of bridging financing gaps that continue to challenge development efforts in developing and African nations.
The Minister added that Egypt advocates for fairer representation of African countries in international financial institutions and development banks. He also called for enhancing domestic resource mobilization across Africa through reforms aimed at broadening the tax base and expanding digitalization to improve financial management efficiency.
Kouchouk explained that adopting long-term development-oriented policies contributes to better external debt management across the African continent. He concluded by stressing the importance of promoting intra-African trade as a strategic foundation for strengthening the competitiveness of African countries and markets globally.
