Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Communications and Information Technology launched a new electronic system to strengthen governance, encourage and localize the mobile industry in Egypt, ensure fair competition and confront illegal practices in the telecommunications market for the benefit of citizens, investors and the Egyptian economy, and working to support efforts to provide locally made "mobile phones" with high quality, competitive prices and export incentives, taking into account that a large number of international companies have begun to manufacture mobile phones of all kinds in the Egyptian market.

A joint statement by Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Communications and Information Technology stated that customs duties and tax on imported mobile phones are "as is and has not changed", and that every citizen coming from abroad shall be granted an exemption on the mobile phone for personal use for a transitional period of three months, explaining that citizens are allowed to register their imported mobile phones in the new electronic system through "Telephony" application without the need to consult customs officials, where they can inquire about the fees due and pay them online within a period that extends, for the first time, to three months through "telephony" application.

The joint statement added that this new electronic system guarantees governance, inquiry, registration and electronic payment of any due fees, and also contributes to protecting citizens from smuggled, counterfeit and mobile phones that do not meet specifications by providing electronic inquiry about the codes of the original devices through "Telephony" application.

The joint statement pointed out that the new system applies to new phones imported from abroad and does not apply to current phones that were previously purchased from the local market or from abroad and were activated before 1 January 2025, as this system is not applied retroactively.
